When my family decided to visit South Dakota, one of the destinations I wanted to visit was the Chief Crazy Horse Memorial being sculpted from a granite mountain not far from the Mt. Rushmore National Memorial. Crazy Horse was a Lakota leader who lived bravely, nobly and never surrendered.
Of Crazy Horse it has been said that “his ferocity of spirit remains a guiding light for all who seek lives of defiance.” The area surrounding the sculpture will also provide educational and cultural programming and a repository for American Indian artifacts, arts and crafts.
I decided to do a photo essay of the memorial and to use the memorial grounds and what I discovered as a foundation for creating a memorial for my own family in Minnesota.
