It could be because the role of this soil was to create a moat that was used to hold water.
The cutaway of the earthwork, at the very beginning shows 4 different colors of dirt (the different shades of brown are subtle) and the dirt was layered horizontally. The number FOUR is significant due to the fact that there are 4 cardinal directions—north, south, east, and west, 4 elements –fire, air, water, and earth, four seasons and 4 segments to a medicine wheel.
